Almost every part you can imagine exists for one, which is great until you are staring at a hundred options and trying to figure out what actually fits your Jeep and works together. This page covers the fitment side of a Wrangler build: what lift you need for the tires you want, what has to be done right so it drives well, and what parts belong on a Jeep that sees Iowa trails and gravel.


Why the Wrangler Builds Like Nothing Else


Two things make the Wrangler special to build. It runs solid axles front and rear, which is why it flexes so far on the trail and why lift kits work so cleanly on it. And it has a short wheelbase, which makes it nimble over obstacles that stop longer rigs. The catch is that parts fit by generation. Lifting a Wrangler the Right Way


Most Wrangler builds start with a lift, because it sets up everything else. Your generation matters more than people expect here. The JL has noticeably roomier wheel wells than the older JK, so the same tire takes less lift on a newer Jeep. Rubicons also come with higher clearance flares from the factory, which buys you room a Sport or Sahara does not have. With that said, here is the general picture:


       33 inch tires: most JL owners clear 33s with a leveling kit or a small lift and no trimming. A JK usually wants about 1.5 to 2 inches.

       35 inch tires: a 2 to 2.5 inch lift gets most JLs there cleanly, and this is the most popular setup we build. A JK typically needs at least 2.5 inches plus some trimming of the front inner fender.

       37 inch tires: plan on roughly 3.5 to 4 inches with extended bump stops, and expect some trimming at full lock unless you are running high clearance flares.


Those are starting points, not promises. Your wheels and their backspacing swing the answer as much as lift height does, which is why we measure your Jeep before you order tires.


The part that matters more than height is geometry. When you lift a Wrangler, you change the angles your suspension and steering work at. Done right, with the correct control arms, a properly set track bar, and a real alignment, your Jeep drives straight and feels solid at highway speed. Done wrong, you get vague steering, uneven tire wear, or the shaking front end people call death wobble. That is not a mystery problem. It comes from worn parts or a lift installed without correcting the geometry, and it is preventable.


Tires, Wheels, and When to Re-Gear


Tires change a Wrangler more than any other upgrade, and Iowa asks a lot of them. You want grip in mud and on the trail, decent manners on the gravel roads getting there, and enough tread to handle snow and salt in the winter. An all-terrain is the practical pick for a Jeep that gets driven all week. A mud-terrain digs in better when things get soft, at the cost of noise on the highway.


Wheels do more than most people think. Width and backspacing decide whether your new tire tucks under the flare or pokes out past it, and whether it clears at full steering lock. We match the wheel to the tire and the lift so it fits clean instead of rubbing.


One thing to plan for if you are jumping to 35s or 37s. Bigger tires change your effective gearing, which can leave the Jeep feeling sluggish, hunting for gears, and drinking more fuel. Re-gearing the axles brings the power and drivability back. As a rough guide, 33s often pair with 4.10 gears, 35s with 4.56, and 37s with 4.88 or numerically higher, though your engine, transmission, and how you drive all factor in. It is not always necessary on a smaller jump, so we will tell you honestly whether your build needs it before you spend the money.


Armor: Bumpers, Rock Sliders, and Skid Plates


If your Wrangler sees real trails, armor is what keeps a fun day from turning into a repair bill. Steel bumpers protect the front and rear and give you a place to mount a winch and lights. Rock sliders protect the rocker panels, which are expensive and easy to crush, and they double as a step on a lifted Jeep. Skid plates shield the oil pan, transmission, transfer case, and fuel tank from the rocks and stumps you will eventually find.


How much you need comes down to where you actually wheel. A Jeep that runs gravel and light trails does not need the same armor as one that crawls. We match it to your driving instead of selling you a full kit you will never test.


Winch and Recovery Gear


Wheeling a Wrangler means getting stuck eventually. That is part of it. A winch is the anchor of a recovery setup, and the rest of the kit matters just as much: rated straps, proper shackles, and safe recovery points on the Jeep itself. Flares, Doors, and Tops


This is the section no other vehicle gets. Once you run bigger tires, they stick out past the factory fenders, and fender flares cover them, keep mud and rock spray off the body and off other drivers, and finish the look. Flat or high-clearance flares also give a big tire more room to move at full stuff on the trail.


Then there is the part that makes a Wrangler a Wrangler. Doors off and top down season in Iowa is short, so people want the swap to be easy. Iowa gravel roads have no streetlights and winter dark comes early, so lighting earns its place on a Wrangler that gets used. A light bar throws distance down a trail or a gravel road, and pod lights fill in the ditches and the corners. The part that separates a good install from a bad one is the wiring, since it has to be fused correctly, switched cleanly, and sealed against mud and water. Lights that die the first time you hit a puddle were not installed right.


Wrangler or Gladiator


If you are shopping rather than building, the short version is this. The Gladiator takes the same Jeep DNA and adds a real truck bed, so it hauls and tows more, while the Wrangler keeps the short wheelbase that makes it more nimble on tight trails. Both build up beautifully, and the parts are not interchangeable across the two, so know which one you have before you order anything.
